Children Cantonese

Our Cantonese language and culture school welcomes children ages 4 to 12 through a nurturing, progressive learning journey. Students begin by discovering the sounds and spirit of Cantonese in a fun, age-appropriate environment, gradually building familiarity and confidence with the language. As they grow, learners develop greater independence, deepen their cultural connections, and begin engaging more actively with peers and instructors. Through the intermediate years, students find their voice — expressing themselves with increasing ease and fluency across a variety of everyday topics and situations. By the advanced years, students bring together years of study to communicate with confidence, exploring the richness of Cantonese language and heritage in meaningful, lasting ways.

Year 1 — Discovery (Beginner)
Children are introduced to the sounds and rhythm of Cantonese through songs, stories, and play. Early lessons focus on everyday words like numbers, colors, and family members, building a natural feel for the language in a warm, welcoming environment.

Year 2 — Exploration (Beginner)
Students continue growing their spoken vocabulary and begin their first steps into written Chinese, learning to recognize and trace characters. Art and hands-on activities keep learning fun and engaging.

Year 3 — Growth (Elementary)
Students expand their vocabulary and begin reading and writing simple Chinese characters independently. Lessons introduce foundational building blocks of the written language alongside continued speaking practice.

Year 4 — Development (Elementary)
Students deepen their ability to read, write, and speak in Cantonese, forming simple sentences and engaging more actively in class. Cultural connections are woven throughout to bring the language to life.

Year 5 — Connection (Intermediate)
Students begin holding basic conversations and applying their reading and writing skills in more meaningful ways. Lessons strike a balance between language mechanics and real-world communication.

Year 6 — Expression (Intermediate)
Students grow more confident communicating in Cantonese, constructing longer sentences and engaging in back-and-forth conversation. Reading and writing practice becomes more independent.

Year 7 — Fluency (Advanced)
Students engage with Cantonese across a broader range of topics, holding longer conversations and producing written paragraphs. Cultural literacy deepens alongside language skills.

Year 8 — Mastery (Advanced)
Students bring together years of language and cultural learning, communicating with confidence and writing short stories and compositions. Graduates leave with the ability to converse comfortably in Cantonese and read and write traditional Chinese.
